The westside: fast facts

  • Saint Paul’s “Westside” neighborhood is actually located south of Saint Paul. West side is used because the neighborhood sits on the west bank of the Mississippi River.

  • The Westside is home to Saint Paul’s largest Latino community. The area along Wabasha and Cesar Chavez is now being called District del Sol due to the growing (and still growing) number of Latino-owned businesses.

  • The limestone cliffs on the edge of Westside are actually the long-ago shoreline of huge glacial River Warren.

  • All the land west of the Mississippi River belonged to the Dakota people until treaties were signed in 1851. After which, for better or worse, it took 27 years for the Westside to be fully connected to Downtown Saint Paul by ferries and bridges—Saint Paul finally annexed the neighborhood in 1878.
